Ridding your Pet of the Tick & Fleas Menace

Ridding your Pet of the Tick & Fleas Menace

We love our pets unconditionally as much as they love us and most often, we engross ourselves in ensuring their comfort and happiness. One step towards ensuring comfort for our furry partners is to keep them safe from the recurring problem of fleas and ticks infestation. It is heartening to see them relentlessly scratching themselves hoping for some relief. They can even lead to skin infections including Lyme disease. Hence, it is imperative to remove these parasites from your pet’s body. As human parents, we can make attempts to rid them of this problem and also implement measures to curb their entry into your pet’s fur through simple precautionary steps.

These annoying bloodsuckers thrive in hot and humid weather. As the temperature rises, they multiply faster and it may often take week after week extending to months to get rid of them completely. The furrier the animal, the more challenging it is to rid of them as they find sufficient hiding space in your pet’s body. Keeping your pet clean and maintaining hygienic surroundings go a long way in preventing your pets being attacked by fleas and ticks.

Here are a few preventive steps to get rid of fleas and ticks:

Keep a flea comb handy

Our pets’ routine comprises of regular walks and every time they are out basking in the sun, fleas and ticks infection is inevitable. Hence, after returning from every walk or play time, brush their fur with special flea combs. It will extract the fleas and ticks. You may get rid of them by draining them in running water or vacuuming.

Regular Gardening

Our pets love to play in green areas. If you have a garden in the front or backyard, ensure to keep it clean at all times and prevent overgrowth of plants. Regular mowing of the grass and trimming of rich foliage will ensure that these pests do not find any place to harbor. You may also use flea sprays in mild quantities to keep them at bay. Regular gardening will ensure a pest free environment for your pets to play freely.

Keep gated entries for your garden so that no animal from outside can venture into your property. When our pets come in contact with other animals especially street-bred ones, the chances of our pets being infected by fleas and ticks is higher. Hence, it is better to prevent their entry or keep minimal physical contact with them. Food attracts animals from outside. Thus, it is better to feed your pets indoors and keep other animals away from your property.

Hygiene within the House

Cleanliness is essential to keep pests at bay, especially the remote corners of the house. Fleas experience three stages of growth, which include eggs, larvae and pupae. The easily catch on carpets, velvet and woolen materials. Hence, for a pest free environment, it is ideal to vacuum once in every 10 days and more frequently, if your pet is already having ticks and fleas. Deep cleaning in hidden corners and under the beds/shelves etc. is most significant for ensuring a healthy environment. At least 90% of damage can be controlled through vacuuming and deep cleaning. If your pet is a frequent companion in your car rides, then it is highly recommended to clean the car too using vacuum cleaner. Hot water cleansing of the pet’s bed, foam, toys etc. go a long way in eradicating fleas and ticks from your pet’s life. You must dispose of the waste immediately after cleansing and vacuuming as pests may continue to breed if lying undisposed at your residence.

Medicated shampoos and sprays

The market has a wide range of special shampoos for fleas and ticks control, which are highly effective in removing ticks and fleas from your pet’s body with every wash. Effective sprays are also available, which can be used on other days to control ticks and fleas. These products also ensures odour control in animals. Medicated powder(s) for pets are also available to curb the spread of fleas and ticks. One must wear a mask while applying these medicated products on your pets to prevent inhalation of minute particles into your lungs. It is also recommended to use sprays under the carpets, sofa corners and other hidden spaces in the house.

Keep checking your dog

It is essential to keep checking your dog regularly, especially the feet, toes and the hollow areas under the feet. While patting your pet, remain attentive to any lumps, bumps and rough patches. Once you find any hard area in the skin, wear gloves and inspect the area by parting the fur. If you spot copper like dots, spray a sanitizer and extract the tick/flea from its mouth area. If any small portion is left behind, whether it’s eggs, dirt, etc., it will continue to harm your pet. Dispose off the tick/flea in running water.

Examine minutely areas which have less fur and the belt area. For eg. Inner sides, belly, armpits, ears, face etc. You may even find them inside the ears. Hence, it is best to clean the inside of the ears with soft tissue.
